Startup’s Objective

The startup strives to create and promote natural areca leaf bio-compost tableware through development of Multi-Dice Production Machine to improve efficiency and find a suitable replacement to the plastic versions.

Market Need

Single use plastics are posing a big threat to the planet because of their non-renewable properties. As per the report of the United Nations, it is estimated that the world produces 400 million tonnes of plastics out of which only 9% is recycled. The global food service disposables market size was valued at USD 56.5 billion in 2018.
The North-Eastern Region is replete with betel nut plantations and the industry of betel nut leaf plates was started back in 2008. However, the growth of this industry has been slow-paced in comparison to South India and other South-Asian countries like Malaysia and Myanmar. Major bottleneck in Betel Nut/Areca Leaf tableware industry are:
-Difficulties in raw material mobilization and sourcing.
-Higher cost and carbon emission in raw material supply chain.
-Inefficient production and non-standardized machines.
-Low income support to raw material suppliers.

Product/Service description

Recon offers an alternative to single use plastic-based food serving disposable products with eco-friendly, bio-compost tableware made from betel nut leaf at affordable prices to meet the segments of customer through cluster model approach, engaging to empower remotely located rural and hill communities. The startup is developing a Multi-Dice Production Machine with 5 times higher productivity from the ones currently available in the market.
They are developing micro units to produce semi-processed raw materials with Standard Operation Process.
The semi-processed raw material will yield greater income for suppliers than the regular raw materials.

Revenue Model

Revenue is generated from product selling to customers. The margin is decided on the basis of quality for three sections of customers:
-Export Buyers (top 30% of total production)/100% Margin
-Supermarkets and E-commerce-Domestic (second 30% of total production)/60% Margin
-Whole sellers and Retailers (remaining 40% of total production)/25% Margin

Current Traction

The startup is currently developing a working model of the Machine. 18+ Villages and 4+ Hill Villages in Assam have approached for Cluster Model development. They have roped in 17 retailers and 3 major whole sellers in Assam and Meghalaya, including 6-7 major sweet shops and QSRs in Guwahati.
